Work Order or Requirement? The Traceability Test Most MRO Teams Haven't Run

Cover image A question for MRO and CAMO teams having a DOA in-house: when a repair or modification traces back to a DOA-approved design, is that link documented at the level of the actual certification requirement - or does it stop at the work order?

Work-order-level traceability tells you which document authorised a repair. It doesn't tell you, without more digging, which specific requirement that repair was substantiating compliance against, what the original acceptable means of compliance were, or whether anything in the applicable certification basis has moved since. For a routine repair, that gap rarely matters. For an AD-driven modification or a life-extension programme, it matters a great deal.

If you want to test this: pick a five-year-old major repair on your fleet and ask someone to produce the original requirement-level substantiation, not just the approval reference. Time how long it takes, and count how many people it takes.
